In 2017, three IT enthusiasts decided it was time for something new. After years of building, hosting and tweaking game servers (and everything that comes with it), we were looking for a new challenge. With plenty of experience and a network of good contacts from previous jobs and projects, we got started: Matreon Hosting was born.
With rented hardware from OVH, we got to work for our first customers. Hosting websites and applications? We had that down. Registering domain names, though, turned out to be a whole different story. Meanwhile, we were asking ourselves some big questions too: how do we stand out from the competition, and what do we need to make this a success?
In the years after we started, we grew fast and bought our first servers of our own. Secondhand, but ours. That meant lower costs, more control and the feeling that the company was really ours. It also brought new challenges: redundancy and operational security suddenly became serious topics.
Next came the move to our very first rack, an impressive 15 feet away, in the same data center. With the rack, the network became our job too, where before we'd just plugged a cable into a server. None of us had any experience with this, but we had the network up and running within an afternoon. Proof that we learn fast, and we still build on that experience every day.
In 2019 we had to move again. Our costs were climbing and we'd been a little too optimistic about our growth, so staying in the old data center was no longer an option. After a long search, we found a new home for our equipment, and it turned out to be a lot cheaper. We stayed there until January 2024, with enough (financial) room to keep growing. An expensive adventure, but above all, one we learned a lot from.
In the summer of 2021, we bought our first brand-new servers. Supply issues meant they took a while to arrive, but in the fall of 2022 they finally went live.
Our old hardware is now enjoying a quiet retirement as backup for when something goes wrong or major maintenance is needed.
In January 2024, we moved to a new data center for the third time. It was a complex job, but it went off without a hitch. And while we were at it: a completely rebuilt network, now more stable and secure than ever.
We learn every day: from our mistakes, from our customers, from the industry and above all from our own passion for what we do. Not a day goes by without trying something new, because we love new technology. That's how we stay ahead, and we're pretty proud of that.
In 2025 and 2026, we grew faster than ever. More customers, more servers, more of everything. At the same time, we used that growth to take every part of our service a step further: more redundancy, higher speeds and a platform that can take an even bigger hit.
That didn't come without growing pains. Parts shortages regularly left us running into capacity issues, and sometimes we were stuck waiting on that one component that just wouldn't show up. Frustrating, but it kept us sharp, and we're proud of the result.
We love technology, and if there's one thing that's certain in our industry, it's that it never stands still. That's why we always keep our knowledge, equipment and way of working up to date. Not because we have to, but because it's our passion. For the future of Matreon IT, that means: keep building and improving to get the most out of every service for our customers. Since day one, we've shaped the way we work around what they need, and that's exactly what we'll keep doing in the years ahead.
